Mustangs snap Rams winning streak

Box Score

TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams dropped their Saturday afternoon tilt 4-0 to the Western Mustangs.

In a game where Ryerson was able to get 39 shots on goal, none of them were able to find the back of the net. Western's goalie Carmen Lasis came into as one of the top goalies in the league and her talent was on full display in this game.

Ryerson head coach Lisa Haley said, “[Lasis] is a quality goalie she led [Western] to a silver medal at Nationals as a first-year kid, so we knew we were facing a really good goaltender.”

Things took a turn for the Rams seven minutes into the first period when a tripping penalty put them down a skater. Western wasted no time on the advantage on 20 seconds later they had the opening goal of the game.

For Ryerson, the first period was summed up by a number of slight misses. If a few shots or passes were slightly more on target or taken a better bounce the period would've been much different.

But sometimes things don't go your way and for Rams that was the first period of this game, Ryerson failed to tie things up and trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes.

The second period saw Ryerson control most the opening play, and early in the period Ryerson had a 4-1 shot advantage. But that wasn't enough to even up the game and they found themselves still down by a goal.

Although Ryerson was pressing and owning the play it was Western taking full advantage of just their second shot of the period, a nice pass set up a Mustang player wide open in the slot and she rifled it home giving Western a two-goal lead.

The efforts from Ryerson continued throughout the period but it was to no avail and after two periods the Rams had 23 shots and nothing to show for them.

Ryerson captain Kryshanda Green said it all comes down to execution, “we had open slot opportunities, had rebounds, all that is left to do is put the puck in the back of the net.”

To make matters worse for the Rams, Western added another goal late in the period taking a 3-0 lead into the third period.

The third period was the same story, Ryerson had their chances but failed to break the zero and Western added their fourth and final of the game while shorthanded.

In net for the Rams was Fanny Vigeant. Vigeant has been very good for the Rams in recent games but was on the wrong side of this one.

Vigeant said, “You can't win them all, we're going to learn from this and come back stronger. We need to look at the game and see where we can get better and work on the little things.”

Ryerson will wrap up their semester when they play the Laurier Golden Hawks on Dec. 1.
