Rams battle back to defeat Laurentian in shootout

Box Score

In what was shaping up to be another regulation loss for the Ryerson Rams, a bad deflection would turn the game around and a beautiful shootout move would seal the deal, as the Rams pushed past the Laurentian Voyageurs by a final score of 2-1.

BOXSCORE

Laurentian's Nicole Vigilanti (Woodbridge, Ont.) would open up the scoring for the Voyageurs, coming off the blue line to fire a quick one-timer that would beat goaltender Rachel Seely (Ottawa, Ont.) on the blocker side. The rest of the first period would remain scoreless, and the Rams headed into the dressing room down by a goal.

In a scoreless second period, Ryerson would outshoot Laurentian 14-5.  The Rams' shot count in the second period totalled just one less than the team had all game Saturday against Nipissing (15 shots through three periods).

The remainder of the game would remain scoreless until Ryerson's Sarah McGilvray (Stouffville, Ont.) would tie it up midway through the third period.  McGilvray looked to attempt a cross-crease pass to linemate Kryshanda Green (Brampton, Ont.), but the puck would be deflected into the net by a Laurentian defender.

Regulation play ended on a 1-1 tie, and five minutes of overtime would solve nothing.

In typical Ryerson women's hockey fashion, the first round of the shootout would remain scoreless.  To the rescue, yet again, was Ryerson's team-leading scorer Brooklyn Gemmill (Cambridge, Ont.), who would score an absolutely beautiful goal to secure victory for her team.  The Rams claimed the victory in this matchup, pushing past Laurentian by a final score of 2-1 in the shootout.

The Rams will leave their Northern road trip 0-1-1-0, gathering two points for their weekend showing.  Looking ahead, the Rams will head east to take on the UoIT Ridgebacks on Saturday and will face the OUA's top team, the Queen's Gaels, on Sunday.
