TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams men's hockey team moved above the .500 mark with an impressive 6-3 victory over the Concordia Stingers on Friday night at George Bell Arena.
Ryerson was without five regulars (Michael Paolo, Greg Payne, Jason Cassidy, Jason Kelly and Jason McDonough) due to injuries and suspensions.
"Well that was the important thing," said Rams head coach Graham Wise regarding his team's performance. "With a lot of guys out of the line-up, other guys stepped up and worked hard. I give them full credit for getting the win."
BOXSCORE
The Rams would control play in the first period, firing 20 shots at Concordia netminder Nicholas Champion (Labrador City, N.L.). Ryerson forward and Hamilton, Ont. product Dustin Alcock opened the scoring with his team-leading eighth goal of the season at 2:12 when his wrist shot from the off-wing snuck past Champion. Ryerson went up 2-0 a couple minutes later as Brian Birkhoff's (Richmond Hill, Ont.) point shot found its way by a screened Champion.
The Stingers would get one back less than a minute after the Birkhoff goal when the Rams were caught on a sloppy line change. The resulting 2-on-1 would see Kyle Kelly (Pointe Claire, Que.) put Emile Bouchard's pass in the back of the net behind Ryerson goaltender Troy Passingham. David Grant would restore the two-goal lead for the home side at the 12:02 mark, tipping in Frank Carbonaro's point shot.
Grant would make it 4-1 midway through the second period, electing to shoot on a 2-on-1. The Owen Sound, Ont. native fired a wrist shot low on the blocker side past Champion for his second of the night and fifth in the last three games.
With just over a minute to play in the middle frame, Steve Taylor would give Ryerson a 5-1 lead. Jesse Chidwick sent a pass to Carbonaro in the high slot. His shot was wide but Taylor was there to bury the rebound.
The Stingers would gain some momentum with a goal by George Lovatsis 4:45 into the third period. However, Ryerson would respond quickly as Captain Andrew Buck made it 6-2 on the power play just over two minutes later.
Eric Bouchard would score a highlight reel goal on a great individual effort for Concordia to make the final 6-3.
Passingham stopped 30 of 33 shots, and although not as busy on the night as Champion, made some big stops at key times in the game. Champion saved 36 of 42 shots he faced. Ryerson was 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Stingers were 0-for-5 with the man advantage.
The Rams, who improve to 6-5-2, return to action on Sunday when they host the No. 2 nationally-ranked McGill Redmen, 2:00 p.m. at George Bell Arena.
