Financial Awards
Athletic Financial Awards (AFA)
Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Athletic Financial Awards are open to undergraduate and graduate student-athletes registered at Toronto Metropolitan University who participate on the eight (8) U SPORTS level programs (Men's and Women's Basketball, Hockey, Soccer and Volleyball). Toronto Metropolitan University Athletics follows U SPORTS and OUA regulations for awarding Athletic Financial Awards. All Athletic Scholarships are for a period of one year. The minimum amount of Athletic Financial Awards to be awarded is $500, while the maximum is $4500.
Student-athletes are nominated for Athletic Financial Awards by their coach. It is the coach's discretion to nominate student-athletes based on factors such, but not limited to, athletic merit, team leadership and team scholarship fund availability.
Per U SPORTS and OUA Rules
OUA AFA Policy: 6.5.1 Restrictions on Receipt of Athletic Financial Awards
6.5.3 Entering Student Restrictions
6.5.3.1 In order to qualify for an AFA, an Entering Student must:
I) have a minimum entering grade average of 80%, or the equivalent G.P.A., on those courses used to determine his/her university admission, and,
ii) be listed on the Eligibility Certificate and eligible to participate in at least one OUA conference competition on behalf of their school (or non-conference competition if there is no formal conference schedule for that sport at that school);
6.5.4 Non-Entering Student Restrictions (for individuals who have previously qualified for an AFA at the school they are attending)
6.5.4.1 In order to qualify for an AFA, an Non-Entering Student must:
i) have satisfied OUA Academic Standing Requirements to remain eligible for OUA competitions during the last academic year he/she was listed on an Eligibility Certificate of the awarding school, and OUA AFA Policy Page 4
ii) have attained a minimum 70%, or the equivalent G.P.A., on all registered course work within the last academic year he/she was listed on an Eligibility Certificate of the awarding school, and iii) be listed on the Eligibility Certificate and be (have been) eligible to participate in at least one OUA conference competition (or non-conference competition if there is no formal conference schedule for that sport at that school) on behalf of their school in the academic year he/she is receiving the AFA.
Athletic scholarship will be dispersed in two equal instalments during the academic year pending academic eligibility verification.
Devon Lord Brooks Athletic Award
Devon Lord Brooks was a student and an athlete who passed away unexpectedly at the age of twenty-seven. Devon was working on two additional degrees when she passed away, and was a competitive national level figure skater and power cheerleader in her high school and undergraduate university years. She was a wakeboarder, gymnast, snowboarder and outdoorswoman in her post grad years.
Devon's family, long associated with the TMU community, wish to encourage body, mind and spirit by creating an award that recognizes academic excellence, athletic ability, and service to the community.
The Devon Lord Brooks
Athletic Award is handed out annually to Toronto Metropolitan University student-athletes. This financial award recognizes academic excellence, athletic ability and service to the community and ranges from $1,000 to $4,500.
To be eligible for this award, a student must:
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person;
- Be an Ontario resident
- Demonstrate financial need as determined by Toronto Metropolitan University through completion of a detailed budget submission in accordance with OTSS guidelines;
- Be a full time undergraduate OR full time graduate student registered at Toronto Metropolitan University;
- Have a minimum CPGA of 2.67 or higher and have clear academic standing OR if a first year student, a minimum 80% average in final year of high school based on the best 6 Ontario grade 12 U/M courses;
- Be an active participant in good standing on a U SPORTS or Ontario University Athletics team at Toronto Metropolitan University
Rams Talk Mental Health Resilience and Support Award
The #RamsTalk campaign was founded by former women's hockey player Janella Brodett in 2014. Initially a social media campaign, #RamsTalk used the power of social media to break down barriers and open the conversation on youth mental health. The campaign raised over $20,000 for Canadian youth mental health organizations in 4 years.
The #RamsTalk Award will support student-athletes through a financial scholarship, empowering a discussion of strength and support with those affected by mental health illnesses. The #RamsTalk Mental Health Resilience and Support Award was initially funded by The Brookfield Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
Two awards of $1000 each will be given each year.
To be eligible for this award, a student must::
- Be a full-time undergraduate OR a full-time graduate student registered at Toronto Metropolitan University;
- Be enrolled in 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th year of their program at Toronto Metropolitan University;
- Have a minimum CPGA of 2.67 or higher and have clear academic standing;
- Be a member of a varsity or club team at Toronto Metropolitan University.
TMU Bold Equity and Inclusion Award
TMU Bold student-athletes strive to be perennial medal contenders in Ontario University Athletics (OUA), and yet many face barriers that prevent them from reaching their full potential academically and athletically. The TMU Bold Equity & Inclusion financial award will support the ambition of student-athletes from equity deserving groups to achieve excellence academically and athletically.
