TORONTO — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team defeated the Queen's Gaels in front of a sold-out crowd for their 2026 Homecoming game at the Mattamy Athletic Centre, 6-5.

The energy of the match was just as hectic as the energy in the rowdy home crowd to start, with the teams trading goals within the first five minutes of period one. The Gaels struck first with a smartly-angled deflection, but the Bold used the loud support of their fans to fire right back. 

TMU's Connor Bowie found a pocket between the legs of Queen's goalie Ian Michelone off of a shot from forward Carter MacAdams that deflected off of Michelone's chest plate and evened the score at 1-1 early. 

"Homecoming is [a game] that all the players circle every year," said Bowie, "so everybody is always fired up for that. Great to come out with a win, and hopefully some of the fans come back."

Bowie, the team captain, scored 11 goals in just 18 games played last season.

"It's a lot of fun," added Bold Head Coach Johnny Duco when asked about the homecoming crowd, "the guys work hard and it's a great level of hockey, so anytime we can showcase it to the student population, it's awesome. It was a great show tonight."

The Gaels, who entered the game with three exhibition matches already under their belt, used their existing chemistry to put together a hot streak with three straight goals to grow their lead to 4-1 by the end of the first. Queen's led just narrowly in shots on goal through the frame, 15-13.

Despite the deficit, though, the Bold's pressure never relented. They earned multiple transition opportunities as first year forward Jack Rimmer narrowly missed a deflection opportunity in a scramble around the net. 

That persistence paid off early in the second: second year forwards Marko Djordjevic and Carter McAdams connected on a shot and deflection goal to make things 4-2 and earn TMU some positive momentum.

Along with the rumbling crowd, forwards Gavin Grundner and Adam O'Marra carried that momentum into back-to-back quality chances, and just a few minutes later, the Bold scored again.

A one-timer attempt between forwards Daniil Grigorev and Slava Melikov came bouncing away from the net, where second year Ryan Cooper collected and buried the puck to bring the Bold within just one goal at 4-3. All of a sudden, TMU was back in control of the game.

Despite a goal from Queen's to bump the lead back to two, TMU struck back just two minutes later with yet another goal, erupting the crowd at the Mattamy Athletic Centre: third year defencemen Joseph Ianniello directed a wrist shot from the high slot just underneath the skates of a jumping Djordjevic, who had leapt in the air to set a screen. 

The second period ended with the score set at 5-4 and the Bold leading with 32-27 shots on goal.  The homecoming crowd was rowdy as ever thanks to the countless highlight plays from both teams. 

TMU's six total goals came from six different players, proving the depth of their roster. 

"One thing we've identified throughout training camp here is that we've got a really good offensive team," praised Duco, "we're pretty dynamic offensively…we're going to be able to create in a lot of different ways. I don't think it's going to be just one line carrying the load."

That depth showed its face early in the third, as Melikov found an angle after the puck deflected off the stick of Michelone to score and tie things up at 5-5.

Things got physical as the period approached its end, with heavy hits and penalty minutes appearing more frequently. 

"I don't think we were expecting it to be like that," admitted Bowie, "Queen's is a physical team, but I don't think we expected the [scrappy] sort of vibe…so we did what we could to try to stay out of the penalty box and make them pay when we were on the power play."

Things sat in a stalemate for more than ten minutes after Melikov's goal, a rarity in the high-scoring slugfest. With tensions rising, the clock ticking down, the crowd growing louder and louder, and the score still tied, no one could have expected what happened next.

After a Gaels turnover, first year forward Carson Lloyd found himself in a one-on-one with just five minutes on the clock. While no one expected the freshman to pull anything out of his bag of tricks, he shattered all expectations by notching an early contender for goal of the year.

Lloyd dangled his way through the stick of a Queen's defender and faked out Michelone with a beautiful backhand snatchback, flicking it in on the left side and showboating to the roaring homecoming crowd. The forward, who boasts experience in the British Columbia Hockey League, entered the biggest moment of his very first game with the Bold and handled it with the poise of a five-year veteran.

"I was fortunate enough to be in a spot where I could do something, and it went in–so that's nice," Lloyd humbly explained after the game, "it was a ton of fun."

"What a goal," praised Duco, "truly incredible. We've seen it every day in practice; we were really excited to see what he could do, and he exceeded those expectations."

What ended up being the game-winning goal sent the Mattamy Athletic Centre into a frenzy, much to Lloyd's delight: 

"It's awesome. I mean, to have the whole school there, it's so loud in that building, so it gets all the guys up and definitely gives us a boost of energy."

As the final buzzer sounded with TMU leading 6-5, Duco's squad took home an unforgettable comeback win on an unforgettable homecoming night. 

The win came with some extra internal satisfaction for the Bold, as they fell to the Gaels in overtime during the 2026 OUA bronze medal game last year. In their very next game on the ice, TMU pioneered an epic 4-1 comeback against the same team to earn some revenge.

"New year, clean slate, but obviously you're looking for some redemption any time a team ends your season," explained Duco, "so proud of the way the guys stuck together and got a little bit of redemption–hopefully we can do the same in March."

The Bold's next game comes on Saturday September 19 in Oshawa against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks, and their regular season kicks off on October 9 away at the Guelph Gryphons.
