TORONTO—After a testing four-game road trip to open the 2026-27 season, where an optimistic first-game victory was quickly overshadowed by three straight setbacks, the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team finally returned to friendly territory.
There's nothing like home ice to reset the narrative, and the team delivered with a dominant 5-2 victory against the Lakehead Thunderwolves to begin their home schedule.
In the first period, the Bold struck early. At the 1:38 mark,
Slava Melikov drove the puck down the right side of the ice, drawing the defence and allowing
Gavin Grundner to catch Lakehead netminder Carson Cherepak off guard. Grundner tapped the puck through a narrow gap between the right post and Cherepak's left pad to put TMU on the board.
"I'm playing with good players," said Grundner. "I've been playing with good line mates, they make it easy and we've been gelling."
That early momentum spread through the lineup, and five minutes later, TMU doubled its lead. From the middle of the right circle,
Ryan Cooper snapped a shot toward the Lakehead net, where
Tanner Scott—waiting to the left of the crease—flicked the rebound past a fallen Cherepak.
The goal was the first in the OUA for Scott, a new addition to the Bold who recently returned to action after battling early-season injuries.
"It felt awesome," said Scott about getting the first goal off his back. "I've dealt with a couple of injuries and got back in the lineup this weekend, so it felt good to help the team win today."
As the period progressed, the game turned chippy as both teams ramped up the physicality. A pair of stick infractions—a double minor for high-sticking and a slashing penalty—put the Bold on a lengthy 5-on-3 penalty kill.
Despite being down two men, the Thunderwolves cut the Bold's lead to 2-1. While the goal wiped out the first half of the double minor, TMU still faced over a minute of 5-on-3 penalty-killing time. Goaltender
Mason Beaupit, backed by key defensive efforts from
Spencer Shugrue,
Brendan Tomilson, and the rest of the special teams unit, stood tall and blocked several shots to prevent Lakehead from tying the game.
The physicality of the game continued to rise and with 44 seconds remaining, a large brawl in centre ice sent nine players, four from TMU and five from Lakehead, to the penalty box, resulting in a Bold power play that would extend to the start of the middle period. By the end of the match, there were a total of 23 penalties given.
Going into the first intermission, the TMU led 2-1, with the home team outshooting Lakehead 18-7.
The Thunderwolves pushed for an equalizer in the second frame, but the Bold shut the door.
Once again, TMU found the back of the net early.
Lachlan Wells received a pass in the low slot from
Carson Lloyd and tucked it just past Cherepak's extended leg. The goal marked Wells' first OUA goal.
"It was nice to finally get it done and it was a good overall game for the whole team," said Wells.
Defensively, Shugrue and Tomilson continued to throw their bodies in front of dangerous shots, repeatedly denying Lakehead's primary scoring threats.
Seven minutes into the period, TMU earned a power play that showcased some brilliant playmaking. At the blue line,
Marko Djordjevic dangled the puck through a Thunderwolves defender's legs before feeding
Carter MacAdams, who drove hard to the net. MacAdams then dropped a return pass back to Djordjevic in the slot, whose quick shot was saved by Cherepak.
A minute later, the Bold were handed a 5-on-3 power-play opportunity of their own, racking up high-quality shots from Tomilson,
Connor Bowie, and Djordjevic.
Grundner capped off the second-period scoring with his second goal of the night on a penalty shot. Swooping in on net, he faked out Cherepak and beat him on the backhand to put the Bold ahead 4-1 heading into the final intermission.
Grundner currently leads TMU in both goals (4) and points (7), marking a standout start to the season.
In addition to Grundner's production, MacAdams—a fellow second-year forward making his season debut after recovering from injury—made an immediate impact in the third period.
Refusing to let up, the Bold extended their lead on a breakaway goal by MacAdams, making him the team's fourth distinct goal-scorer of the night.
"Really proud of the way the group played tonight at home," said head coach
Johnny Duco. "We strung together a full 60 minutes of consistent, solid hockey, scoring from all the lines. Everyone contributed and that's when we're at our best when everyone is pulling that rope together."
Despite a late second goal from Lakehead, the Thunderwolves were unable to overcome the dominance TMU displayed throughout the night. The Bold ultimately outshot the Thunderwolves in shots on goal 43-20.
Up next, the Bold will continue on home ice, playing the Thunderwolves again on Friday, Oct. 30. Puck drop is set for 6:15 p.m. and TMU students can attend for free with their OneCard.
