Bold Dominate Early, Defeat Mustangs 3-2

LONDON, Ont. — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team defeated the Western Mustangs 3-2 in a game that went down to the wire.

The Bold put their first goal up early in the opening frame. With Western's Eric Van Impe called for slashing, TMU went on the power play and converted. Ianniello sent a pass to Daniil Grigorev, who fed the puck into the crease, where Marko Djordjevic tapped it in by the post.

Two minutes later, the Bold found themselves on the other side of special teams, but kept the momentum going despite being on the penalty kill.

A cross-ice pass from a Mustang was deflected by a Bold stick, leaving the puck free and gliding into the neutral zone. Djordjevic and Mustangs' Zach Power both raced to the free puck, but Djordjevic won the battle, broke in alone and scored five-hole.

TMU continued to dictate the pace, limiting Western's chances to close the gap.

The first period ended with the Bold ahead 2-0.

In the second period, the Bold continued to apply pressure against the Mustangs, however, Hunter Donohoe received a penalty and the Mustangs were able to capitalize on the man-advantage, closing the gap to 2-1.

The middle frame closed out with the score 2-1 and TMU ahead in shots on goal, 28-15.

Just under two minutes into the final period, Daniil Grigorev took a clean shot from the centre of the left circle that flew past Chazz Nixon, giving the Bold some cushion with their third goal of the night.

Down by two, the Mustangs pushed the pace and generated a flurry of shots against Kai Edmonds, but he stood tall in net.

In the final two minutes, Western pulled their goalie in an attempt to close the gap. Despite their efforts, they could not tie the game.

TMU was able to close out the game victorious, 3-2.

Up next, the Bold will continue on the road against the Guelph Gryphons on Thursday, Feb. 4. Puck drop is at 7 p.m., and fans can catch the game on OUA.tv.
