Finalists announced for 2024 TMU Bold Awards

With the 2023-24 athletic season in the books, the TMU Bold are proud to honour its student-athletes and their accomplishments. Below you can find the finalists selected by the Bold Awards committee for our seven major awards, ahead of the winner presentations happening Thursday, April 4.

G.L. Dobson Award

The G.L. Dobson Award is given to a student-athlete preferably in her/their graduating year, who has provided leadership and participation in a specific ongoing activity or in a collection of community and/or campus life activities. Also, this recipient usually has been involved in a leadership role on a team, maintains a positive attitude both on and off the field of competition and personifies sportsmanship.

Tori Butler

Fifth-year hockey player Tori Butler has had a lengthy career of giving back to the TMU community and inspiring her teammates to do the same. Butler volunteers regularly with Hockey 4 Youth, introducing new immigrants to the game of hockey and teaching them how to skate and play the sport. She also helps lead team initiatives like the annual Do It For Daron game, fundraising over $2,700 this year for youth mental health, and assisting with the hockey team’s Christmas toy drive in conjunction with CHUM radio.

Lizzie Farsang

Third-year soccer player Lizzie Farsang has been involved in many facets of the community this year, leading several soccer team initiatives. Farsang planned and executed a team food drive and has created a lasting partnership with Scott Mission. She organized a student-athlete yoga event which achieved full capacity and is currently planning a “Spin with Soccer” campaign that will be a fundraising event around Mother’s Day. A student academic mentor, Farsang also leads in the academic space and was recognized as a Top 200 student through TRSM based on leadership and strong academic performance.

Britney Veltman

Fourth-year volleyball player Britney Veltman has been an active member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council this year and showed her dedication to supporting the Bold community. Veltman volunteered at the Homeless Connect event at the MAC this fall, spending the day supporting the homeless population in Toronto, and is the lead organizer of this year’s Motionball event for Special Olympics, coming up in April. Veltman’s leadership helped drive fellow women’s volleyball teammates to attend Bold events and to support other teams. She was also a lead promoter of the team’s “Support the Girls” campaign which collected clothing and funds for Rose of Sharon and the Red Door Shelter in support of ending family homelessness and to provide services to young mothers.

D.H. Craighead Award

The D.H. Craighead Award is given to a student-athlete preferably in his/their graduating year, who has provided leadership and participation in a specific ongoing activity or in a collection of community and/or campus life activities. Also, this recipient usually has been involved in a leadership role on a team, maintains a positive attitude both on and off the field of competition and personifies sportsmanship.

Kyle Bollers

Third-year hockey player Kyle Bollers, a multi-time winner of this award in the past, continued his pursuit of giving back to the community again this season. Bollers took a leading role in the hockey team’s Regent Park Holiday Skate, distributing food and hockey gear to community members and teaching them to skate. His “KB’s Bold Crew” is a weekly event at the Boys and Girls Club where he plays floor hockey with local kids to promote inclusivity in hockey, and encourages other Bold student-athletes to attend and experience giving back to the community. Bollers runs a learn to play hockey program, AAO Hockey, that nurtures the next generation of hockey players through coaching and mentorship, and acts as an assistant coach with a U16 AAA team, emphasizing the importance of youth development.

Lincoln Rosebush

Fifth-year basketball player Lincoln Rosebush served as the chair of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council this season and implemented the new “Battle of the Bold” program, encouraging student-athlete engagement and community connection this year. He’s also a student academic mentor with the Bold and a mentor with the Toronto Foundation for Student Success, helping children facing hardships find academic success and improved health and wellbeing. Rosebush also volunteers as a guest coach with the Toronto Lords basketball program.

Lucas Yang

Third-year volleyball player Lucas Yang was an active member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council this season, organizing various workshops for student-athletes to help increase skills off the field of play, including personal finances and transferable skills. Yang is also a student academic mentor and is a key strategist in helping the men’s volleyball team with their off-court and academic goals.

Outstanding Performance in Club Sport

This award recognizes outstanding athletic achievement by a male or female student-athlete who represents a club sport at TMU. Recognition as an all-star, MVP, OUA medalist or qualifying for U SPORTS finals or OUA finals are important criteria in the nomination.

Erika Dominguez

Fourth-year fencer Erika Dominguez won the individual gold medal in the foil weapon at the OUA championship. She went undefeated through the competition and was named an OUA all-star.

Abigail Dove

First-year golfer Abigail Dove became the first female golfer at TMU to win an invitational event when she struck gold at the Guelph event.

Ethan Haines

Fourth-year fencer Ethan Haines won the individual silver medal in the foil weapon at the OUA championship and earned all-star status.

Dechlan Papadopoulos

Second-year wrestler Dechlan Papadopoulos earned a silver medal in his weight class at both the OUA and U SPORTS wrestling championships and was named an OUA all-star.

TMSU Female Rookie of the Year

This award recognizes outstanding athletic achievement by a female student-athlete in her/their first year of OUA/U SPORTS eligibility.

Hailey Franco-DeRyck

First-year basketball player Hailey Franco-DeRyck rewrote the history book in her first season in the blue and gold. Franco-DeRyck pulled in a new TMU record 219 rebounds this year which ranked fourth among all OUA players. She was also fourth in the league in blocks with 33 and her defensive prowess helped the Bold reach the OUA semifinal.

Catrina Garvey

First-year basketball player Catrina Garvey made her presence felt in her first season with the Bold, playing 32.8 minutes per game, the fifth most among all OUA players. Garvey often controlled the offence from the point guard position, averaging 13 points per game and converting 109 field goals to land just outside the league’s top ten while being named the OUA and U SPORTS Rookie of the Year. 

Neely Van Volsen

First-year hockey player Neely Van Volsen hit the ice with a bang this season, appearing in all but two games for the Bold. A disciplined player with just four penalties all season, her five goals were tied for third most on the team and she finished with 10 total points.

The Eyeopener Male Rookie of the Year

This award recognizes outstanding athletic achievement by a male student-athlete in his/their first year of OUA/U SPORTS eligibility.

Daniil Grigorev

First-year hockey player Daniil Grigorev quickly became an offensive threat for the Bold in his first season. His 12 goals was third most on the team and 20th among all OUA players. Named to the OUA All-Rookie Team, Grigorev finished with 21 points in 27 games this season, helping the Bold to an OUA silver medal and fourth place finish in the country.

Gabriel Gutsmore

First-year basketball player Gabriel Gutsmore made a splash on the hardwood in his first season in the blue and gold. Playing in all but one game for the Bold, Gutsmore was often the first option off the bench and made the most of his opportunities, shooting 51.5% from the field, good for 10th best in the OUA. Named to the OUA All-Rookie Team, Gutsmore averaged 8.6 points per game to rank fourth on the team.

H.H. Kerr Female Athlete of the Year

This award is given to the most outstanding female student-athlete in a sport where recognition by other coaches as an all-star, MVP, OUA medalist or qualify for U SPORTS finals or OUA finals are important criteria in the nomination. Exceptional skills as demonstrated by their sport specific statistics are essential to this recognition. Leadership, sportsmanship is secondary.

Emily Baxter

Fourth-year hockey player Emily Baxter turned in a career-best 23 points this season, tying the TMU women’s hockey single season record. Her 14 goals was third best among all OUA players, and she scored in all situations for the Bold en route to being named an OUA Second-Team All-Star.

Ashley Ditchfield

Fourth-year volleyball player Ashley Ditchfield was a force at the net for the Bold this season, racking up 84 total blocks to lead the OUA. She accumulated 196.5 total points on the season, including 115 kills and 21 service aces, was named an OUA First-Team All-Star, and guided the Bold to the OUA semifinal.

Kaillie Hall

Fourth-year basketball player Kaillie Hall had an impressive all-around season helping the Bold reach the OUA semifinal. Her 13.6 points per game ranked 17th in the league, while her 48 steals ranked 8th and 65 assists ranked 11th. Hall shot the ball efficiently, reaching top-20 ranks both from the floor and the free throw line, and was named an OUA Third-Team All-Star for her efforts.

Lauren Veltman

Fifth-year volleyball player Lauren Veltman earned OUA First-Team All-Star status after a consistent offensive season. Veltman finished seventh in the OUA in kills with 197, while her 221 total points ranked tenth. Handling a bulk of TMU’s offence, Veltman was also efficient, hitting at a 0.252 percentage to rank eighth in the conference.

On the Record Male Athlete of the Year

This award is given to the most outstanding male student-athlete in a sport where recognition by other coaches as an all-star, MVP, OUA medalist or qualify for U SPORTS finals or OUA finals are important criteria in the nomination. Exceptional skills as demonstrated by their sport specific statistics are essential to this recognition. Leadership, sportsmanship is secondary.

Kyle Bollers

Third-year hockey player Kyle Bollers put on an offensive show this season, racking up 42 points in 28 games, good for third in the OUA. His 18 goals was second in the conference, as were his 24 assists. Named an OUA First-Team All-Star, Bollers helped the Bold win an OUA silver medal and finish fourth in the country at the U Cup.

Chris Campoli

Fourth-year soccer player Chris Campoli made a splash in his first season with the blue and gold, piling up 12 goals in just nine games to lead all players in the OUA. The top scorer was named an OUA First-Team All-Star and helped TMU reach the quarter-finals.

Alex King

Fourth-year volleyball player Alex King is looking for his second straight Athlete of the Year award after another solid season on the court. King racked up 259 kills to rank fourth in the OUA while his 300 total points was good for fifth. Named an OUA First-Team All-Star, he was also strong defensively, picking up 129 digs in his first season playing on the right side. 

Aaron Rhooms

Third-year basketball player Aaron Rhooms was a consistent scorer for the Bold this season, netting 366 points, good for 11th in the conference. Named an OUA Second-Team All-Star, Rhooms was also fifth in the OUA in rebounds, seventh in steals, and seventh in made field goals to showcase his all-around game.
