Walker scores twice to lift Bold to season opening win

SUDBURY - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's soccer team earned three points in their season opener with a 2-1 victory over Laurentian on Saturday afternoon.

The game was off to a slow start, with three offsides given to the Voyageurs. Voyageurs' goalie Hunter Jones saved the first shot on goal made by Vanessa Pianta.

An attack from the Voyageurs was saved by Bold goalie Abby Harrison right before a double foul on Laurentian was called.

The game started heating up when two corner kicks were made by Lizzie Farsang followed by a yellow card issued to Skylar Sheehan-Alleyene.

The Bold's offence was strong with two more shots on goal made from Pianta, but both failed to add points for the Bold.

The squad tried tirelessly to earn an advantage against the hosts, but both sides failed to add a tally to the scoreboard in the first half.

A halftime pause fired the Bold up, starting the action with three back-to-back shots, but it was a foul on the Bold that awarded a penalty kick to the Voyageurs. A successful goal by Caitlyne Kervin put the home team one up against the Bold in the 63rd minute.

Eager to make a comeback, Bold coach Natalie Bukovec decided it was time to switch things up in Sudbury.

Coming off the bench to make her debut in the 69th minute, Taliyah Walker scored the first goal for the Bold this season in the 70th, with an assist from Sheehan-Alleyene to tie the score.

This was exactly the type of push the team needed to try and claim a victory on foreign field.

Just minutes after her first, Walker put another goal on the board with help from Kennedy Pryce, giving the Bold a 2-1 lead.

The Voyageurs fought hard to try and even out the score once more, but were unable to find the back of the net. Harrison stood tall in goal for TMU, making six stops to help secure the victory.

The game ended with the Bold celebrating their efforts in Sudbury, but this is just the beginning for the squad.

Tomorrow, the team heads to North Bay to battle the Nipissing Lakers. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. and can be seen online at OUA.tv
