Bold fall to Gee-Gees in third straight loss

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's soccer team played the second game of their doubleheader weekend against the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees at Downsview Park on Sunday.

The team fought hard but was unable to secure a win against the No. 2 nationally ranked Gee-Gees. This is the Bold's third consecutive loss this season.

"Ottawa is a very clinical and very technical team. They can finish on almost everything so I think some things were unexpected. Genuinely, I think we could've closed down space better," said Bold goalkeeper Abby Harrison.

The first half started strong, with a great save from Harrison. The Bold then forced the Gee-Gees to defend, attempting to score a goal. The visitors pushed back with a shot on goal but failed to score with the ball going off the left post.

Gee-Gees Cassandra Provost opened the score sheet for the game in the 11th minute.

Bold defender Vanessa Pianta was booked early in the contest on a questionable call and head coach Natalie Bukovec was heard saying, "It's their world. We just live in it."

"Not crazy about some of the officiating calls if I'm being completely honest. The first 30 seconds there was a clear high foot," said Bukovec.

A 20th-minute substitution from the Bold brought fourth-year Skylar Sheehan-Alleyene on for Kaleigh McKye.

The Bold couldn't deny a second goal from Gee-Gees Allana Oriente that found its way into the back of the net after going off the right pole.

As pressure built up, a handball on Oriente awarded Bold midfielder Emily DiNatale a free kick, but the team couldn't score.

Despite a save from Harrison and an offside for the Gee-Gees, the Bold were down 3-0, with Provost scoring her second goal of the game.

Bold senior Ivymae Perez was being guarded by the visiting players but managed to score off her free-kick in the 39th minute.

"It felt like I was being man-marked the whole time but playing against tough teams like this I've always got to adjust," said Perez.

Some back and forth between the two teams continued until the Gee-Gees scored in the 45th minute. The halftime score was 4-1.

The second half kicked off at Downsview with Ottawa possession. The Bold took to the offensive, looking for another goal.

As the Gee-Gees started to advance, the squad worked together to build a barricade against Ottawa with Harrison saving three attacks.

Two Bold substitutions brought on second-year Jazz Dev and fifth-year Soraya El-houni, followed by the Gee-Gees celebrating another goal.

A near shot from El-houni was saved by Ottawa's goalkeeper Cassidy Joslin before she was on the turf and subbed off for a head injury.

A final goal attempt from Ottawa was denied after going off both poles and then out of bounds.

The match ended in a tough loss for the Bold. The Gee-Gees overpowered the hosts to bring the final score to 5-1, earning them three points.

"Learning lessons are everyone needs to be kept healthy," said Bukovec as the team prepares for their next match.

The team resets to host the Toronto Varsity Blues in the subway series at Downsview Park on Sept. 16. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
