Gursoy hat-trick seals the deal over Lakehead

TORONTO - The TMU Bold opened their doubleheader weekend against the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday night. Coming off a few losses, the Bold were looking to cover some ground and secure the win.

New changes to the lineup added to their success. Chris Playfair, who's coming back from an injury, played on the wing alongside Elijah Roberts and Connor Bowie - a different mix for the night and it paid off.

"Anytime you can make a few small changes, you're looking for a little bit of a spark," said head coach Johnny Duco.

Right away, the Bold took control of the puck and worked to bring it up the ice to the Thunderwolves net, shooting as much as possible.

Halfway into the first period, Kevin Gursoy fired a rocket into the Thunderwolves net for his eighth of the season, giving the Bold the lead.
Gursoy and Kyle Bollers went to a Toronto Maple Leafs game last night, and for Gursoy, Mitch Marner's hat-trick was all the inspiration he needed.

"We were joking around, about how we wanted to do the same thing tonight, and fortunate for us, we had the legs going and they were going in," said  Gursoy.

Following the first goal, Bowie came in hot, putting the puck in the net and giving the Bold a 2-0 lead.

At the end of the first, the Bold came out with 16 shots and only five for the Thunderwolves.

Going into the second, the Bold were determined to keep on scoring, leaving the Thunderwolves in the dust.

The Thunderwolves made their attempt and scored their first of the game, but Gurosy quickly shut down their momentum and tipped the puck in after a shot from Daniil Grigorev.

"We need to set some big plays, so it's fantastic playing with those two," said Bollers.

Starting goalie Kai Edmonds was strong in net, making 22 saves throughout the game.

The Thunderwolves did not back down, scoring their second goal of the night, and for the Bold, the pressure was on.

With four minutes left in the second, the Bold went on the power play and took full advantage of it. A quick pass across the ice from Bollers to Gursoy made this his most successful game yet. Gursoy recorded his first hat-trick playing for the Bold.

Even though the Bold were up in score, they knew that anything could happen. Coming into the third they were ready to be aggressive and tactical with the puck.

The Bold and the Thunderwolves went back and forth in penalties and during the penalty kill, Edmonds was a huge asset.

The Thunderwolves were physical in the third, but it didn't come close to the adversity of the Bold. To start their weekend with a win was electric for this team.

Bollers recorded three assists, each setting up his linemate Gursoy during his hat-trick.

"He's one of my best friends on the team, so playing with him in general is really fun," Bollers commented.

Finally, with one minute left on the board, the Thunderwolves managed to squeeze in their third goal, making this a one-goal game, but it wasn't enough.

The Bold will be back on the ice Saturday for game two against Lakehead with puck drop at 7:15 p.m.

"In the first, we were really good, but we kind of tailed off a little bit, so tomorrow I think we need to bring in that same energy in the first period for all 60 minutes," added Gursoy.
