Blues blank Bold in home and home opener

TORONTO - The Toronto Varsity Blues handed the TMU Bold their third loss of the season Thursday evening, using a dominant first half to catapult them over their crosstown rivals by a 4-0 score.

The first half of the contest between the two rivals saw the field heavily tilted in the Bold's end. The visiting Varsity Blues side came out of the gate hungry for offence, and it showed on the scoreboard.

Head coach of the Bold, John Yacou was "not fully convinced [TMU] were good enough" while dueling it out with their rivals.

The OUA's assist leader Karly Hellstrom got the party started for the Blues, sinking a shot in the bottom left corner of the Bold goal to take the early lead.

Just minutes after the mark, Blues winger Miranda Badovinac extended her side's lead with a goal of her own, jumping through the air before heading the ball over goaltender Abby Harrison

Second-year winger Lizzie Farsang believed the lack of communication was the difference maker in the first half, as the Bold looked "disconnected" all throughout.

Despite a push back by the Bold, the game began to unravel for them in the late stages of the half. The team's leading goal scorer Ivymae Perez would leave the pitch earlier than expected due to injury. Moments after Perez's exit, the Blues added a third tally to the scoreboard.

After smashing the crossbar from in close, Lindsay Bosveld picked up her own rebound before cashing in her team-leading sixth goal of the season to send the Blues to the locker room up big.

The second set of 45 minutes didn't treat TMU any better as the team opened up their final push with one less helper on the pitch. A tackle in her own box earned Harrison an automatic ejection in goal. The sophomore keeper made numerous key saves in the early stages of the game to control the damage.

The offence needed to scrape back into the game was absent from the Bold throughout the second half. Beaten in quality and the quantity of chances throughout the evening, the Bold surrendered a fourth and final blow in the 90th minute to put a bitter end to the match.

"Against a team like that you have to be aggressive. We were not aggressive," said Yacou following the loss.

The Bold will get a second shot at cracking the Blues lineup this upcoming Saturday as they kick off their five-game road trip at Varsity Field. Game time is set for 1:00.
