Lions spoil Rams lone home game of the semester

Box Score TORONTO - In their only home game of the semester, the Rams women's volleyball team fell to the red hot York Lions in a 3-1 decision (18-25, 25-21, 12-25, 23-26). With the loss, the Rams remain winless and drop to a surprising 0-3 record on the season.

In the first set, the Rams fell behind early and, despite two convincing kills from Katelyn Grasman and some impressive blocks from Lauren Wong and Ashley Ditchfield, eventually dropped the set by a discouraging 25-18. On York's side of the court, Jessica Reynolds led the charge for an energetic Lions squad.

The second set saw York jump out to a 4-2 lead, an advantage they'd eventually surrender as the Rams rallied back to jump ahead 8-5, a run that forced York into a timeout. Emerging from the huddle, York's Olivia Kim notched two poignant kills, but couldn't tame the surging Rams, who took the set by a score of 25-21 thanks to the tenacious late work of Wong and Cailin Wark. For the Lions, who swept their first two games of the season against RMC, it was their first set loss of the campaign.

"York did a great job of putting us under pressure," Rams head coach Dustin Reid remarked. "We let small things become big things too often in that match."

In commanding fashion, the Lions began the third set with a 4-1 lead, a gap they'd widen to 8-3 and, eventually, 13-4. Before the Rams could get their bearings in the set, the Lions had jumped all over them, converting a 20-6 lead into a dominant 25-12 set victory.

"We had a chance to win the match and we didn't take care of the ball when we needed to," Reid said of the team's loss.

Propelled by a quick 4-0 lead, the Rams took advantage of back-to-back aces by Mikayla Sherriffs to strengthen the lead to 8-3 in the fourth set. Still, the Lions climbed back to even the set score at 9-9 and, after an errant touch gave York the lead, the Rams quickly retreated into a timeout, after which both teams traded the lead until 16-15. Despite a soaring Wark kill, the Lions took the lead at 22-21 and, after pushing the Rams to their limit, secured the set by a score of 26-24.

After a week of preparation and practice, the Rams take on the Toronto Varsity Blues on the road on Saturday, November 20 at 2 p.m.
