Rams win second straight over Voyageurs in must-win game

TORONTO - The Rams women's soccer team secured their second straight win of the weekend over the Laurentian Voyageurs at Downsview Park on Sunday.

Third-year defender Keira Kent bagged two goals for the Rams, including a spectacular effort from distance in the first half.

It was a back-and-forth affair to start the afternoon, with the Rams and Voyageurs exchanging efforts with no final product.

The Voyageurs then began to put significant pressure on the Rams, which resulted in Voyageurs midfielder Océane La Via hitting the crossbar on the Rams net.

The Rams came back with pressure of their own, however, with attacker Skylar Sheehan-Alleyene and defender Kaleigh McKye creating a pair of chances to swing the momentum back the Rams way.

The home team was finally rewarded for their pressure with a Keira Kent goal, making it 1-0 just seconds before half time.

To start the second half, the Voyageurs struck back with a 50th minute goal from Charlie Frew, but the Rams came right back on the press.

With the game tied at 1-1, Sheehan-Alleyene continued to look dangerous, and forced the Voyageurs to give up a corner kick. Off the corner, Jade Vyfhuis found Kent for her second goal of the afternoon.

The Rams held onto the 2-1 lead and earned all three points to move them to 13 on the season.

Looking back on her team's performance, Rams head coach Natalie Bukovec praised the danger that Sheehan-Alleyene posed throughout the game and ultimately helped the Rams secure the victory.

"Skylar is very intimidating when she's running at you in full press," shared Bukovec. "She's a player that brings a lot of energy for us, so that was the objective today."

When asked about Kent's two goal performance, Bukovic emphasized the multitude of roles the defender successfully plays for the team, saying, "We've depended on her heavily this year–I'd love to play her higher up the field but she's also so great at the back."

Kent also touched on her performance, stressing the importance of her opening goal for the Rams.

"It really opened up our confidence and got us going," she voiced.

The Rams will continue their quest for a playoff position this Thursday, October 28th at Downsview Park against a strong McMaster Marauders side.
