ST. CATHARINES, Ont. — The No. 4 Ryerson Rams cruised their way to a 3-0 (25-14, 27-25, 25-23) victory over the No. 7 Brock Badgers on Sunday afternoon at the Bob Davis Gymnasium in St. Catharines.
Ryerson's
Brett Hagarty (Aurora, Ont.) led the way for the Rams with 12 kills, four service aces, seven digs and 16.5 points through three sets.
The first set saw neither team particularly excel offensively or defensively; rather, the Badgers would total just eight kills and 11 attacking errors on 29 attempts, hitting at -.103 percent and nearly handing the set over to the Rams. Brock's error-ridden play allowed Ryerson to cruise to a 25-14 win in the first, giving the visitors an early 1-0 lead in the match.Â
The second and third sets saw a more balanced effort on both sides of the net, but it was the Rams' resilient efforts that allowed them to prevail. Ryerson's offence flourished in the remaining two sets, as did the team's block; four different Rams totalled four or more blocks in the match, keeping Badgers superstar Laura Condotta under control in the second and third set.Â
27-25 and 25-23 victories in the remaining sets would earn the Rams a 3-0 victory over the nationally-ranked Badgers. Ryerson handed Brock their third loss of the year — their only loss in three sets — while improving to an 11-2 record of their own on the season.Â
Ryerson's
Cailin Wark (Georgetown, Ont.) totalled 12 kills on 20 attempts, hitting at .500 percent and adding four block assists, four digs and two service aces. Middle blocker
Ashley Ditchfield (Windsor, Ont.) contributed two solo blocks and four block assists, while fellow first-year
Jasmine Rivest (Montreal, Que.) also totalled two solo blocks and added three block assists.Â
The game saw the Rams collect their second-best blocking totals on the season (four solo, 16 assist - 12 total), as well as their third-best hitting percentage of the year (.333). The team would also hold the Badgers to just three total blocks through three sets, their second-lowest of the season, as well as their worst hitting percentage this year (.151).Â
The Rams will be back in action on Friday against the Queen's Gaels in Kingston. First serve flies at 6:00 p.m. at the Athletics and Recreation Centre.Â
