Rams fall to No. 1 Gee-Gees in OUA quarter-final

OTTAWA — The No. 1 Ottawa Gee-Gees put an end to the Ryerson Rams' 2019 postseason campaign on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Rams 5-0 in the OUA quarter-final at Gee-Gees Field in Ottawa.

Ryerson's BreAnah Webster (Pickering, Ont.) and Chloe Zomparelli (Richmond Hill, Ont.) each registered two shots on goal in the 90-minute contest.

Ottawa's Trinity Esprit would score the Gee-Gees' opening two goals, the first of which came in the 17th minute. An unfortunate own-goal in the 32nd minute was credited to Esprit, giving the Gee-Gees a 2-0 lead with just under 60 minutes remaining in the match.

Ottawa superstar Mikayla Morton would score her only goal of the game in the 33rd minute, firing the ball past the back post to give her team a 3-0 lead. Soon after, a handball in the Rams' box saw Gee-Gees forward Thea Nour fire a penalty shot goal to give her team a 4-0 lead in the 41st minute.

The Rams would make some positional adjustments in the second half, creating a bit of an offensive spark to try and get on the scoreboard. Ryerson's Brooke Pearson (Pickering, Ont.) had several opportunities to find the back of the net, but Ottawa's tight defense kept the Rams from finding a goal.

Ottawa's Anna Satterthwaite gave her team a 5-0 lead in the 67th minute on a high ball sent right to the top corner, leaving no chance for Rams goalkeeper Elisa Lapadula (Brampton, Ont.). The Rams continued to press through the remainder of the game, but the Gee-Gees handily contained all of Ryerson's advances to hold on for the 5-0 win.

The quarter-final loss to No. 1 Ottawa officially marked the end of the Rams' 2019 season.

Despite the game's results, the 2019 season stands as the Rams' most successful campaign in program history. An appearance in the OUA quarter-final provides a phenomenal stepping stone for Rams head coach Natalie Bukovec to build on next season and beyond, and the team is already poised to enter the 2020 season in the best position yet.
