Excalibur challenge not enough to contain Rams

TORONTO — Despite a strong effort by the Trent Excalibur, the Ryerson Rams maintained their undefeated streak in a 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-23) sweep over the visiting Excalibur on Friday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

Ryerson's Cailin Wark (Georgetown, Ont.) led the Rams with 12 kills and two blocks in three sets.

Rookie blocker Adriana Chiofalo (Pickering, Ont.) made her OUA debut in the first set of the game, playing alongside other Rams newcomers in Teodora Vukovic (Mississauga, Ont.), Brett Hagarty (Aurora, Ont.), and Lauren Wong (Scarborough, Ont.).  The Rams cruised to a 25-18 win in the first set after tallying 12 kills on 25 attempts.

The Excalibur kept the Rams on their toes through the remainder of the match.  As the Excalibur took a 20-17 lead in the final points of the second, the Rams were forced to play at a virtually errorless rate to secure a win in the set.

Ryerson eventually stormed back to take a 25-21 win in the set, but Trent wasn't done quite yet. Playing neck-in-neck with the reigning national champions, the Excalibur prevented the Rams from pulling away with a lead through the majority of the third set.

Vukovic closed off the match for the Rams, tallying two back-to-back kills to give the Rams a 25-23 win in the third set and completing the sweep.

Outside hitter Lauren Veltman (Brampton, Ont.) had 11 kills for Ryerson, while Hagarty led the team with five service aces.

Rams head coach Dustin Reid says he wasn't too happy with the team's performance in the match but was satisfied that the Rams came out with a win.

“We did not play a good volleyball game today,” says Reid. “We let [Trent] get points from our mistakes, which just raised their confidence in the match”

The Rams will be back in action next weekend, heading out on their first road trip of the season to take on the Windsor Lancers on November 9 and the Western Mustangs on November 10.
