WINDSOR — In their first road match of the season, the Ryerson Rams fought hard and took a 3-2 (18-25, 25-22, 25-19, 18-25, 15-12) victory over the Windsor Lancers on Friday evening in Windsor.
BOXSCORE
Ryerson's Lauren Veltman (Brampton, Ont.) led the Rams with 18 kills and 22 points.
The Lancers came out strong to open the match, leading the Rams through much of the first set. Rams rookie Katelyn Grassman (Komoka, Ont.) made her OUA debut in the first set of the game, going on to tally two kills in four sets.
Windsor took a commanding 25-18 win in the first set, but it wasn't long until the Rams were back on their game. A 25-22 win in the second and a 25-19 win in the third appeared to get the Rams back on track, but the Lancers' fourth-set efforts caused the teams to play a fifth and decisive set.
Neither the Rams nor the Lancers could manage to take a lead through most of the fifth set; Ryerson struggled to kill the ball while Windsor attempted to contain their errors.
The Rams eventually pulled away with a narrow lead late in the game. Rookie setter Lauren Wong (Scarborough, Ont.) served up an ace at match point, earning Ryerson a 15-12 win in the fifth set and a 3-2 win in the match.
Wong dished out 47 assists in the game while fifth-year middle Theanna Vernon (Scarborough, Ont.) had nine blocks and 10 kills.
Ryerson will hit the road again tomorrow, traveling to London to take on the Western Mustangs tomorrow evening at 6:00 PM.
