Rams take over third period, claim big road win

Box Score

NORTH BAY, Ont. - The first road trip of the season opened just how the Ryerson Rams women's hockey team would have wanted it to, with a regulation win. Ryerson beat the No. 9 ranked Nipissing Lakers 5-2.

It was a picture-perfect start to the game for Ryerson with Brooklyn Gemmill scoring just two minutes into the game. The early goal was all of the scoring in the first period, however, it was Ryerson who owned most of the play and kept Nipissing unconfortable for a majority of the period.

Going back to their opening game of the season, a big takeaway was the amount of penalties they took and although they were able to kill off all of the penalties that day, it was not the case against the Lakers.

Seven minutes into the second period Nipissing had a 4-on-3 advantage and they wouldn't let it go to waste tying the game at 1-1.

The Rams were quick to bounce back at even strength and just a few moments later Karli Nummikoski got her second goal of the season giving the Rams a 2-1 lead; a lead that looked like Ryerson would take into the third period.

However, with under a minute to play in the period, Nipissing would press and break through bringing the score to 2-2.

The third period was all Rams, and after a successful penalty kill Madison Lalonde forced a Lakers turnover and whistled a goal past the goalie, giving the Rams their third lead of the game.

It was a lead that the Rams wouldn't surrender this time, and with three minutes left Erika Crouse gave the Rams insurance by putting home an empty netter to give them a two-goal lead, and then Ryerson added another empty netter for good measure with five seconds to play.

A notable takeaway from this game was the Rams defence and their ability to limit Nipissing's chances. Even on penalty kills the Rams did a great job of limiting big opportunities for the Lakers.

The win gives the Rams momentum into their game Saturday when they take on Laurentian at 4:00 p.m.
